As well as herbal home cold remedies, traditional food remedies can be both effective and nourishing.

They also have an advantage in that they are easy to prepare, very inexpensive, and fun! It can be quite empowering and intriguing to discover the healing powers of food, and nothing teaches us this quite as well as our own experiences with these home cold remedies.

Home remedies, particularly food remedies, do not have even the somewhat mild side effects that some herbal remedies can have. And food remedies rarely interact with any pharmaceutical drugs.

Chinese Home Cold Remedies food cures

  • cook noodles to the taste of the person with the cold. Add 25 grams fresh onion heads (white), and 25 grams fresh ginger. Mix thoroughly. Stay in bed after eating it.

  • peel and crush 15 grams garlic. Add 15 ml rice vinegar. Use as in the noodle dish above.

  • boil 10 grams peppermint and 10 grams crushed green onion white heads in water to make a tea. This is for relieving headaches associated with a common cold.

If or when a fever develops, cooling foods are used, but still with a pungent flavour. Nutritional home cold remedies - supporting your immune system

  • get plenty of sleep
  • improve the way you deal with stress. Meditation is highly recommended, but for those who have no interest in meditation, some form of light exercise.
  • antioxidant vitamins e, c and betacarotene.
  • fresh garlic daily, particularly at onset of a cold. Also, zinc lozenges (50 mg per day).
  • herbal mixture of mullein, euphorbia, liquorice, horehound and marshmallow
